Rosita Arvigo has a way of bringing both intellect and spirituality to all she participates in. Her story is full of dedication and inspiration. She studied with Don Elijio Panti, a Mayan Traditional Healer, in the rainforest of Belize for 12 years and made a promise to care for his village's children when he left this earth. To this day she advocates for the environmental protection of the Belizean rainforests and creates local support for the children of his village through education, supplies, and an herbal summer camp. If I were to proclaim a Guru for myself, it would be her. The Arvigo Techniques of Mayan Abdominal Therapy remain steeped in tradition, yet they are infused with a modern understanding of reproductive anatomy from Rosita's training as a Naprapath. It is the perfect axis for all of my varied interests such as herbology, massage, spirituality, anatomy and physiology, energy work, and feminism. Suffice to say the convention was all of this and more.
I had anticipated a leisurely experience of attending a few classes and socializing, interspersed with naps, journal writing, and spending time in nature. Not so. The classes were so fascinating and jam packed, and sharing with like minded practitioners was so invigorating that I had no time to open my journal until the last day! My favorite presentations were "Body Literacy and the 5th Vital Sign; Intro to Fertility Awareness" by Coleen Holland D.C., "Use of Hydrosols for Pelvic Health and Wellness" by Lisa Kelly L.M.T., and "The Endocannabinoid System" by Heidi Hanselman L.M.T.
